I was about five years old…this moment is so fresh in my mind…
Like many five-year olds, I was curious. I tiptoed into Moms bathroom, long pony tail wagging behind me. I was about to do something I had only dreamt about. I took a deep breath as I slowly and carefully opened what I knew to be the magic drawer of makeup. Inside I’d find each color in the rainbow. As I opened the drawer, I’m pretty sure I remember beams of light shooting out at all angles. My eyes widened as I shuffled through the bright pinks, the creamy blues, the velvety reds and the sparkling purples (my favorite). To think I could turn up the lipstick tube all by myself, wiggle my little fingers into that strange contraption for your eyes, or maybe even use the fun powder puff on my face.
Big-person footsteps creaked down the hallway on the hardwood floors. Shuffling through the lipsticks, I smeared something on my lips, fluffed some powder on my face and nonchalantly scurried out the door.
With a perplexed smirk on her face, Mom took one look at me and laughed – each of my little fingers were painted in an assortment of colors, the stick of ‘lipstick’ was a tube of under eye concealer – the ‘blush’ was white baby powder. The word mime probably came to mind. Needless to say, it was just the beginning for me and this magical world of makeup.
