FPM Product Review – Mascara!

22 Nov

For most of my life, I’ve gotten urgent phone calls from friends that go something like “I’m at the makeup counter and I need to know if I should get the cherry red lipstick or ruby red!  What do I do?!”  I LOVE giving makeup advice, and for some reason everything I’ve read regarding makeup products and makeup tips has completely sunk in.  As for everything else in life, well I have the worst memory.  But when it comes to makeup, there’s a reference manual inside my head that I am constantly sifting through.  So I decided to start doing some product reviews to share my thoughts.  I’d love to hear your feedback, I hope you find them helpful!

Without further ado, here we go with our first ever FPM Product Review.

Maybelline Colossal Cat Eyes Mascara

maybelline-new-york-the-colossal-cat-eyes-mascara

Price Range:  $5.99

Where to buy:  Your nearest drugstore, Target, Ulta, Amazon

Website claims:  Colossal lashes go fully feline in one stroke.  Lush Collagen formula and claw brush fill out lashes up to 8 x the volume with fabulous cat-like corners, instantly. It’s wild!  For best results, apply the claw brush against the lashes and sweep from root to tip for a full look in just one stroke. Removes easily with soap and water or Expert Eyes® 100% Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover.

What I love about this product:

  • I love that the website says ‘It’s wild!’ HA
  • I love that it’s buildable.  You can swipe one coat for a very natural look, or multiple coats to really thicken and lengthen.
  • With a few coats, you will be amazed at how much this product makes your lashes pop without making them clumpy.
  • The waterproof formula really works!
  • You can’t beat the price.  Very reasonable especially when you’re tossing mascara after their 3 month shelf life.

What I dislike about this product:

  • The packaging is a little bold for my taste.
  • Sometimes I have trouble removing the waterproof mascara from my lashes.
  • Rarely I will notice very small amounts of flaking, but nothing too severe.
 Overall ratings:
  • Packaging: 2 out of 5
  • Price:  5 out of 5
  • Quality:  5 out of 5
  • Would I buy again?  Absolutely

Switch up your eye makeup – Try these ideas!

30 Sep

Do you start off your makeup routine with a deep sigh and think to yourself ‘well, here we go again’.  Okay, that’s no fun, and makeup might as well be fun…I mean, there are so many options out there and so many colors and looks to inspire!  We might as well make the most of it and feel dynamite when we walk out our bathrooms in the morning.  Sometimes it gets a little boring doing the same ol’ makeup look day in and day out.  A simple switch to your eye makeup can make all the difference in your mood and your overall appearance!  I’ve put together three quick and fairly simple eye makeup looks for you to try.

The Ombre Eye:  The ombre look has been all over the place with hair color.  Why not try it with eye shadow!  Apply one color shadow at the base of your upper lash line and blend upwards just above your crease to fade the color.  Be bold and pick a perky color such as sky blue, royal blue or magenta…and if we’re not feeling all that adventurous, try a neutral such as navy blue (as seen in the pic below), eggplant purple or a shimmery baby pink.

Image

The subtle Cat Eye:  Using a liquid liner can be intimidating and is typically the option to choose with a cat eye look.  For something easier and more subtle, try using eye shadow instead.  The colors to pick here are black, dark grey or navy blue.  Using a thin liner brush, apply shadow lining base of upper and lower lashes only at the outer corners of your eyes.  Applying an eye primer under your shadows will help products stay on muuuuch longer.

Image

Unexpected Color:  I am seeing a lot of metallic shades for the Fall.  Metallic doesn’t have to mean intense.  It really depends on the color you choose.  If you opt for a dark metallic grey, the intensity factor goes way up and if you opt for a light silver, your look will be more subtle.  If you’ve never played with metallic shadows before, I’d start with the lighter colors first.  Maybelline color tattoo eye shadow is a great bang for your buck at only $5-$7 buckaroos and comes in a variety of light and bold color options.

Instant face lift with one makeup product

13 Sep

I love the makeup training sessions with my clients, especially when I get to the ‘this is how you apply concealer’ part.  The response I get is usually an overwhelming ‘woah, I look so much more awake’ or ‘hey! there’s my eyes!’.  Now I have tried many…many (ah, many) concealers.  I have been blessed with some lovely dark circles.  If I take a nap or get a good nights sleep they aren’t too bad, but the moment I feel even the slightest bit sleepy they creep out of nowhere and look rather scary.

Well…maybe not this scary…

Image

…but enough to really alter my entire look.  The key is picking the right shade.  A peach shade is best.  Nothing too light that it screams “I HAVE GIANT HALO’S AROUND MY EYES, CHECK IT OUT!” and nothing too dark that it, well, exaggerates the darkness.

The color should be one to two shades lighter than your foundation.  I like concealers with a creamy consistency and a light enough feel that the product doesn’t settle into fine lines and exaggerate wrinkles.   I have tried many concealers (did I already say that?)…and am sharing with you my faves.  Without further ado…here they are!

1)  Origins, Quick, Hide!

Image

Love it for it’s long lasting coverage.  I can’t stand it when I need to reapply concealer two or even three times throughout the day.  This product really does a fantastic job concealing without looking cakey or seeping into fine lines.  Fantastic product that I’ve purchased over and over.  You may have heard me talk about it before.  It was also named one of my Can’t Stop Loving You products, here:  https://fingerpaintmakeup.wordpress.com/2011/08/20/cant-stop-lovin-you-3/

2)  Eve Pearl Concealer

Image

You can find this product on www.evepearl.com and it comes in a variety of shades.  A perfect shade of peach.  This creamy formula goes on silky smooth, blends well and has a very light feel.

3)  Bobbi Brown Corrector

Image

Another product with a peach base and is true to it’s name.  It goes on like magic and really does make those dark circles disappear.  Slightly heavier feel and a thicker coverage.  A little goes a long way.

4)  Chanel Correcteur Perfection Long Lasting Concealer

chanel concealer

Great product for mature skin.  Sits on top of fine lines creating a flawless effect and blends rather seamlessly into skin.  Oh one last thing…it’s long lasting (in case you didn’t gather that from the name).

I’ll leave you with a bright-eyed look to inspire you to add concealer to your makeup collection…

Can’t Stop Lovin’ You!

26 Aug

My can’t-stop-lovin’-you product of the month:

MAC Oil Control Lotion!

MAC Oil Control Lotion

Yes…a product that controls oil!  Yessss….

This product has pretty much saved my life this Summer.  My skin tends to be more on the oil side…add the southern humidity and you can practically see your own reflection in my face.  Yea, that’s gross!

Here is the trick, you need to test this out a couple different ways to see how it works with your every day moisturizer.  What I mean by that is to either apply this before or after your daily moisturizer.  Or simply wear this under your foundation without additional moisture.  It’s a great product, but can definitely interfere in a ‘funny’ way with some products.  So keep that in mind.

Apply your foundation and your other makeup steps as you normally do.  This product really does an amazing job at controlling oil throughout the day.  Even in some serious humidity!

Love it!

Wondering if you should keep that favorite eye shadow you’ve had for ahem…months?  Okay maybe it’s years.  And what about that mascara that’s starting to clump and give off a strange, strong odor?  Check out my quick tips below for what to keep and what to toss!

broken shadow

Face Makeup:

Liquid foundation – 6 months

Blush – 2 years

Pressed and loose powders – 2 years

Eye Makeup:

Mascara – 3 months

Liquid eye liner – 3 months

Cream eye shadows – 6 months

Pencil eye liners – 2 years

Powder eye shadows – 2 years

Lips:

Lipstick – 2 years

Gloss – 2 years

Lipliner – 2 years

Here are a few tips on keeping things clean:

  • Take a quick whiff of that mascara when you first purchase it.  If you recognize that scent, you’ll know when it goes bad.  You’ll smell more of a funny, chemical odor when it’s time to toss.
  • Got a pimple?  Use a cotton swab to apply concealer, to avoid double dipping.
  • If you love labeling like me, adding expiration date stickers to your products is a great way to know when to say good-bye.
  • If you have an eye infection, it’s best to toss those products to avoid re-infection
  • Always wash and dry hands thoroughly before you start Finger Painting!

Finger Paint Makeup Package – Before & After Pics!

24 Jun

Hey Everyone!  Woo…long time no talk.  Things have been a little hectic, but in a good way!  My husband, dog and I moved a few months back, and plan on moving again in the Fall (staying in Chucktown of course).  Wedding season has been busy busy, and I’ve loved every minute of it!  Even though I’ve been doing makeup for over 15 years now, I’ve finished up my first official year in business as FPM and am so incredibly pleased and grateful with the outcome!

…and OH!  I’m pregnant!!  There’s some big news for you!  We are thrilled and cannot wait for what’s to come!

I have been dying to blog now for months, but I honestly had a terrible case of writer’s block woe’s.  I’d come up with ideas at the most random moments, then I’d sit at my computer and POOF, they were gone.  Does that ever happen to you?  Anywho…here I am, I’m back and I sure hope I can keep the writing motivation going!

Ok enough of that!  Let’s talk makeup!  I recently did a Finger Paint Makeup Package  for my lovely client, Jenny.  This is the largest package that I offer!  I also like to call it “FPM MAKEUP OVERHAUL EXTRAVAGANZA”.  Here is the basic breakdown of what’s offered with the package, and then we’ll get to the pictures…(I love me some before and after’s!)

Consultation:  We chat about all things makeup related.  We pull makeup photos that you like and I learn about some basic details regarding your makeup routine.  The primary goal here is to find out your makeup comfort level and what fits into your lifestyle.  Ultimately, we determine what’s going to make you feel amazing in your own skin.

Makeup Bag Makeover:  Turn that makeup bag upside down and we will dissect its contents.  We’ll determine what works for you and what doesn’t.  We’ll also discuss sanitation tips and how long you should really hang on to that favorite face powder.

Face Templates:  We will put together some beautiful, easy customized looks!  Based on everything we’ve learned during your consultation, I’ll determine the right colors for you and we’ll come up with some great new looks.

Shopping List:  Based on our face templates, your budget and what you already own, I put together a list of products recommended for purchase.  This will make it easy for you to make a quick dash by a makeup counter and say “I need this product in this color”…..aaaaand…DONE.

Makeup Training and Professional Makeover:  We’ll finish all this up with a makeover and training.  I will show you step by step how to create one of the looks on your face templates.  We will cover everything, from ‘how do I apply my foundation?’ to ‘how do I accentuate my jaw line and cheek bones?’ to some fancy but EASY eye shadow application techniques…and much more.

Phew!  That’s it!  There is a lot to this package, but it really is a full makeup overhaul and gives you that “YES, I feel like me again…and damn, I look good” mentality to walk away from me with.  That’s really all I want for my clients.

Okay, now for some pictures so you can see what all this looks like!

World, here’s Jenny.  Jenny is absolutely gorgeous.  She has incredible bone structure, not to mention eyes that truly sparkle.  Our goal was to emphasize those features, so we focused on face contouring utilizing bronzer’s and highlighters and made her eyes the focal point.  She is a career woman and wanted a fresh, pulled together look that could take her from day to night.

Above is the consultation form…and below we are creating face templates for Jenny to reference at home.  We reviewed all the steps and techniques needed to duplicate the look.
